MACAA Spring Meeting

May 23, 2019, MSU Eastern Ag Extension Center, Sidney MT 7:30 a.m.

The meeting was called to order by Vice-President Tim Fine at 7:39. There were 35 members and guests in attendance.  Retired agent from Richland County Red Lovec was also in attendance.

MINUTES: The minutes from the Fall 2018 meeting were distributed placed on the website.  Marko M. moved to approve as distributed, Rose M. seconded. Motion passed.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer reported that MACAA has $16,908.11 in our checking account, $4152.27 in our DA Davidson account, and $6056.44 in a First Security Bank CD.  Wendy also discussed how the CD’s and DA account are not really making any money, so she will research some options for the next meeting to present what the membership might like to do differently at the next meeting.  Mike S. moved to approve the report, and Rose M. seconded. Motion passed.

 Committee Reports:

Life Members:  Mike Schuldt will be the new chair.  We would like to have someone from the membership in touch with the life members to try a different communication style rather than a life member in charge of the committee.  Wendy will change it in the system.

Agronomy and Pest Management: Shelley emailed a list of upcoming opportunities both in MT and on the National front for members.  Several were from WSARE grantees (Mat’s Agcast, Tracy and Allisons Drones).  One particular discussion will be for the Palmer Amaranth and pigweed campaigns headed up by Frankie Crutcher and the Weed Science Society of America.  Also in her report was mentioned again about the new EPA glyphosate review.  

Natural Resources/Aquaculture:  Tracy reported that they are in the process of scheduling the pre-Tour at AMPIC.  It will be a 1 day tour.  At the conclusion of the AMPIC, Tracy has also asked to be the National Chair.

Horticulture and Turfgrass:  Pat McGlynn will take over for Toby.  She sent in her report to include the International Master Gardener Program in Philadelphia 2nd week in June, Some of the research projects that Toby and Brent were working on are moving to the WARC, there is another Hort. In-Service in Idaho July 17-19, there is attempting to get a statewide association for specialty fruits, and working with Paul to develop by-laws and organizational status.

Sustainable Ag:  Tyler discussed the SARE fellows program and that we had two applicants.  Adriane was chosen as the statewide winner and will move on to the National selection committee.

Search for Excellence: Jesse sent in a report that we had the national SFE in Livestock (Adriane, Kim, and Kari) for Calvin’ Fever, Adriane was also a National Finalist for the Beginning Farmer and Rancher SFE.

4-H and Youth:  Sharla sent in a report and Renee discussed a majority of it.  She is looking for input on some new curriculum (entomology, organic, pack horse, driving horse) and participation in the livestock and horse committees, and forums. 

Professional Excellence: Tim Fine reported that Adriane was the state winner for the poster.

Public Relations:  Kari reported that we are working on hosting the Western AMPIC

Recognition and Awards:  Wendy reported that Shelley Mills was the recipient of the AA award, and Bruce Smith was the recipient of the DSA award.  Wendy also brought up with the passing of Bruce, how the NACAA will present the award.  Ken moved to provide a member of Bruce’s family with the $500 travel stipend to accept the award if they choose, Tracy seconded, Motion passed.

Ag Issues, Teaching and Education Technology, and Scholarship Committees:  Reported that the NACAA website has webinars and special sessions at AMPIC.  Tim will be the Vice-chair for the ag issues committee for the Western Region.

All other committees had no report.

OLD BUSINESS:

For the quarter horse book of poems, Kari read and passed around a list of stories needed.  Peggy is slowly working on them as they come in.

Cody Stone gave an administrative update as to the happenings in extension.  They are currently wrapping up interviews for a mental health specialist, interviews are scheduled for the wildlife specialist, the forage specialist position is still being written, they are also working on the 4-H volunteer and program delivery specialist position, and the horticulture specialist positions in being served in the interim part-time by Cheryl Moore-Gough.  She will have the same phone number, Dara will also be increasing her hours to help out with questions.  He mentioned that they had a good legislative year with an overall increase of about 4.9%.  Steve S. is working with the university on new strategies to align learning as a whole college. 

By-laws committee are still working on their updates, but have made progress.

The MACAA historical records committee met and recommended we will keep 2 years’ worth of minutes on the website.  There will also be a continual officer page, and we will add Years of Service to the website.  There are new regulations for ADA compliance, so there is a change on what can, should, and would be feasible to put on our website.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

New agents/guests were recognized at this meeting including Kaleena Miller, Carla Sanford, and Red Lovec. 

Wendy Becker gave a brief JCEP conference report.

The Western Region PIC will be taking place at the Best Western Heritage Inn at Great Falls October 1-2, 2019.  There will be a tour and Kim is working on a website.

Several agents will be attending the NACAA AMPIC as many agents have duties, awards and tours.  Cody will hopefully be able to help with registration costs, but is working on his overall budget.

Rose moved to provide up to $500 for each attendee to help with costs at NACAA AMPIC, Mat seconded, motion passed.

We recognized those agents that have passed during this year including Chuck Egan, Bruce Smith, Roy Linn, Bev Wallace, and Shawnee Fowler.

Rose moved to adjourn the meeting, Colleen seconded, motion passed.

MACAA Fall Business Meeting

October 23, 2018, MSU SUB Bozeman MT 12:00 p.m.

 

The meeting was called to order by President Rose Malisani. There were 43 members and guests in attendance.

 

MINUTES: The minutes from the Spring 2018 meeting were distributed, emailed and placed on the website.  Tim F. moved to approve as distributed, Shelley M. seconded. Motion passed.

 

TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer reported that MACAA has $16,307.21 in our checking account, $4152.27 in our DA Davidson account, and $6056.44 in a First Security Bank CD. Tyler moved to approve the report, and Mike seconded. Motion passed.

 

Committee Reports:

Life Members:  Dave B. contacted Wendy about updated life members and does not want to be the lifetime member committee anymore.

 

Agronomy and Pest Management: Shelley discussed that there is a new weed in our neighborhood-Palmer Amaranth and we should be on the lookout for it.  It isn’t in MT yet, but will probably be soon.

 

Ag Economics and Community Development:  Kate discussed upcoming farm management workshops throughout the state, and that there will be a Women in Ag conference as well.

 

Animal Science:  Western Section will be in Boise June11-13.

 

Sustainable Ag:  Tyler discussed the SARE fellows program that you can apply for through NACAA.

 

Search for Excellence: Wendy reported that there two national awards winners-Shelley Mills in Agronomy, and Tim, Colleen, Shelley, Bobbi, and Wendy in Sustainable Ag categories.

 

4-H and Youth:  Wendy reported that she was the national winner for Excellence in 4-H category.

 

Professional Excellence: Tim Fine reported that Shelley won the poster competition for education, and Tracy was a national finalist for Research.

 

Recognition and Awards:  Wendy reported that Pat McGlynn was the recipient of the AA award, and Bobbie Roos was the recipient of the DSA award.

 

Scholarship Committee:  Colleen Buck reported you can look on the website under your name to see how much you have contributed.

 

All other committees had no report.

 

OLD BUSINESS:

Patrick Mangan gave an update on how the ag agent update went in May in Hamilton.

 

Shelley Mills and Wendy Becker gave a report on the NACAA AM/PIC went.  Montana had 8 representatives, Wendy did the pre-tour in horticulture, we had several national, regional, and state winners and several other states were congratulating us on our great programming.  Administration also helped with expenses to send representatives there.  MT agreed to host the Western AM/PIC next year. 

 

Kari L., is working on update to the Quarter Horse book.  Peggy is working on the pages.

 

Historical Records and By-laws committees were still working on their updates.

 

At the 2018 Western Region Conference, Kari won the poster competition, and we had 4 delegates attend.  Jesse moved to reimburse those attending the conference at $250 per person, Shelley seconded, Motion passed. 

 

2019 NACAA Western Region Conference committee will be Kari, Emily, Juli, Kim, Megan, and Jeff, along with Tracy, Jesse and Rose as chairs.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

For Extension Day on the Hill, Tim moved to pay $500 towards the expenses, Shelley, seconded, motion passed.

 

Election of officers:

For sec/treas, Ben moved to nominate Wendy Becker, Marko moved to close nomination, Kim seconded, motion passed.

For 2nd VP, Tyler, Colleen, and Tracy were nominated, Tyler won by ballot count.

 

Shelley moved to offer life membership to Bobbi Roos and Steve Lackman, Tim seconded, motion carried.

 

Ag agent update committee:  Colleen, Jeff, Shelley, Megan, Elin, Shylea, Callie

 

Sire/Dam Report:  Josh had a baby girl Olivia

 

Tim moved to adjourn the meeting, Lee seconded, motion passed.
